The Handwriting of Imam Ibn Katheer (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioning his listening to the recitation of the Muwatta of Imam Malik from his Shaykha Zaynab bint al-Kamal al-Maqdisiya al-Dimashqiya (may Allah have mercy on her) in the Hanabilah Mosque near Mount Qasioun in Damascus [1].

سماعٌ لموطأ مالك بخطِّ الحافظ ابن كثير على شيخته زينبَ بنتِ الكمال المقدسية الدمشقية، وذلك بجامع الحنابلة في سفح قاسيونَ بدمشق:ـ

Ibn Katheer handwriting

She is: Um Abdullah Zaynab bint Ahmad b. Abdulraheem al-Maqdisiya al-Dimashqiya, better known as Bint Al-Kamal [2].

She was born in the year of 646 of Hijra

From her students and those who took knowledge from her are Imam al-Dhahabi author of Siyar A’laam al-Nubala, in which he said when speaking of her father:

“And in this year the Muhadeth, Faqeeh, Kamal al-Din Ahmad b. Abdulraheem, the father of our scholar (i.e. meaning her) passed away” [3]

She had many students and students of knowledge would travel to take from her knowledge. She was known for her gentleness, great manners, and patience with her students.

She died in 740 of Hijra.

In the Biography of ‘Aisha bint Ibrahim b. Sideeq (died 741H) – the Shaykha, the Virtuous, the Scholar, the Worshipper, wife of al-Haafiz al-Mizzi – (may Allah shower her with Mercy):

Imam Ibn Kathir (who was married to her daughter) said:

“She had no equal among the women of her time, with her frequent worship, recitation and passing on of the Noble Quran with fluency, eloquence, and correct recitation, [to a level] which many of the men were incapable of achieving.

Many women completed [the memorization of] the Quran with her, and many recited the Quran to her and benefitted [greatly] from her, her righteousness, and Zuhd in this worldly-life and her sufficing with the very little from it throughout her extensive life which reached 80 years, in which she spent it in the obedience of her Lord in Prayers and Recitation.

The Shaykh (i.e. al-Mizzi) was very courteous and obedient to her, and he did not go against any of her wishes out of the great love he had for her [both] naturally and religiously.

So may Allah –the Exalted- have Mercy on her”[1][2].

قال الإمام ابن كثير وهو زوج ابنتها : كانت عديمة النظر في نساء زمانها لكثرة عبادتها وتلاوتها وإقرائها القرآن العظيم بفصاحة وبلاغة وأداء صحيح يعجز كثير من الرجال عن تجويده وختمت نساء كثيرا وقرأ عليها من النساء خلق وانتفعن بها وبصلاحها ودينها وزهدها في الدنيا وتقللها منها مع طول العمر بلغت ثمانين سنة أفنتها في طاعة ربها صلاة وتلاوة وكان الشيخ( أي المزي) محسنا إليها مطيعا لها لا يكاد يخالفها لحبه لها طبعا وشرعا فرحمها الله تعالى.
