Tulayha ibn Khuwaylid ibn Nawfal al-Asadi became an apostate and claimed to be a Prophet. Thousands of people followed him in his claim. He set up an army to fight the Muslims, but was defeated and the majority of his army were killed upon the state of apostasy they were upon.

He, however, managed to escape, and later repented from his claims and accepted Islam once again. He strived to perfect his Islam and fought for the sake of Allah in the Battle of al-Qādisiyyah and later in the Battle of Nahavand, where he attained martyrdom and his performance was pivotal in the victory of the Muslims in this battle.

Moral of this story: Always be careful about who you choose to follow.

For they perished … But he was saved!

The Battles of Ridda

ramadan-2014 (Al-Sirat Al-Mustaqeem)

Virtues of Ramadan

A Month of Barakah

‘Ubaadah ibn as-Saamit narrated that the Prophet (s) said, “Ramadan has arrived to you, a month of barakah (blessings). Allah envelops you (with His mercy and blessings), so He descends His mercy, erases the sins, answers the du’aas, and He watches in (this month) your competition / race for goodness, and He boasts to His angels about you. So let Allah see the best from you, for truly, the miserable one is the one who is prevented Allah’s mercy.” (Tabaraanee, saheeh)

Quran Revealed

Allaah revealed the Qur’aan in this month, as He says in the verse quoted above (interpretation of the meaning):

“The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’aan, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong)…”

[al-Baqarah 2:185]

And Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Verily, We have sent it (this Qur’aan) down in the Night of Al-Qadr (Decree).

[al-Qadr 97:1]

Ramadan is the month of the Qur’an. Scholars used to leave attending or giving lessons and devout themselves to the Qur’an. Ramadan should be the time for us get attached to this Magnificent Book and try to love it, reap its fruits, and make it our lifestyle.

The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said: “The Fasting and the Qur’aan will intercede for the slave on the Day of Judgment.” Fast will say, ‘O My Lord! I stopped this person from eating, drinking and other desires so accept my intercession for him.’ The Qur’aan will say, ‘O my Lord! I stopped this person from sleep (for Qiyaam) so accept my intercession for him.’ Both the intercessions will be accepted.” [Musnad Ahmad and at-Tabaranee]

In al-Saheehayn (al-Bukhaari, 2014; Muslim, 760) from the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah according to which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever fasts Ramadaan out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.”

The Prophet (s) also said, “Fasting and the Qur’aan will both intercede for the slave on the Day of Resurrection. Fasting will say, “O Lord! I prevented him from his food and desires through the day, so accept my intercession for him. And the Qur’aan will say, ‘I prevented him from sleep at night so accept my intercession for him. So their intercession will be accepted.” [Musnad Ahmad and at-Tabaranee]

The Prophet (s) said, “Whoever fasts one day for the sake of Allah, Allah will place between him and the Fire a ditch as (large as) the distance between the heavens and earth.” (Saheeh Tirmidhi)

Reward is Multiplied

Ramadaan has such a high status; worship at that time is of great virtue and is multiplied greatly, and the sin at that time is worse than sin at any other time.

The Muslim must make the most of this blessed month by doing righteous deeds and giving up evil deeds, so that Allaah may bless him with acceptance and help him to remain steadfast in adhering to the truth

Al-Bukhaari (2008) and Muslim (174) narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever spends the nights of Ramadaan in prayer out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.”

Other Ahadeeth:

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Whoever prays qiyaam in Ramadaan with the imam until he finishes, it will be recorded for him that he spent the whole night in prayer, because of the report narrated by Abu Dawood (1370)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Hold fast to qiyaam al-Layl; for, truly, it is the way of the righteous before you, a means of closeness to your Lord, an expiation for your bad deeds, and a (a means of) prevention from sins.” At-Tirmidhee and al-Haakim. Hadeeth hasan

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The believer’s honor (or dignity) is (in) praying at night. Al-Haakim. Authentic (as-Silsilas-Saheehah 831)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “If one gets up to pray at night and his eyes are overtaken by sleep while in sujood, Allaah says to His angels: Look, my angels! This is My slave! His soul is with Me and his body is before me. Record his qiyaam for him and count his sleep as a sadaqah from Me on him.” Ibn Maajah; authentic (Saheeh Ibn Maajah).

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever prays at night with ten verses will not be written amongst he heedless. And whoever prays at night with one hundred aayahs, will be written from the devoutly obedient, and whoever prays at night with one thousand verses will be written from those with a multitude of good deeds.” Aboo Daawood. Authentic (Saheeh al-Jaami’)

Being freed from the Hellfire

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When the first night of Ramadaan comes, the devils and mischievous jinn are chained up, and the gates of Hell are closed, and none of its gates are opened. The gates of Paradise are opened and none of its gates are closed. And a caller cries out: ‘O seeker of good, proceed; O seeker of evil, desist.’ And Allaah has people whom He frees (from the Fire), and that happens every day.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 682; Ibn Maajah, 1642; classed as hasan by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 759.

Why don’t we be of those who Allah frees from the hellfire because of our worship in this blessed month? What will show Allah subhaanahu wa ta’lah in this blessed month to deserve this?

Giving Sadaqah:

Imams Al-Bukhari and Muslim reported that Ibn ‘Abbas, may Allah be pleasedwith him, had said: The Prophet (Sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) was the most generousof people. He used to be the most generous in Ramadhan when he would meet with angel Jibreal and study the Quran with him. Angel Jibreal would meet with the Prophet (Sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) every night in Ramadhan to teach him the Quran. The Prophet (Sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) was so generous when he met with Jibreal, more generous than the wind that brings rain.”

Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) reported Allāh‘s Messenger (sal allahu alayhi wa sallam) as saying: “Charity does not in any way decrease the wealth and the servant who forgives, Allāh adds to his respect; and the one who shows humility, Allāh elevates him in the estimation (of the people).”  (Muslim)

We should try to increase in giving sadaqah in this blessed month and try to spend every day because in one of these days, Allah may choose to free us from the hellfire.

Reward of giving Iftaar to one who is fasting:

Zayd ibn Khaalid al-Juhani (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever gives iftaar to one who is fasting will have a reward like his, without that detracting from the fasting person’s reward in the slightest.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 807; Ibn Maajah, 1746; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi,

Remembrance of Allah:

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Not an hour passes by the son of Aadam, in which he does not remember (or mention) Allaah, except that he will deeply regret it on the Day of Resurrection.” Bayhaqee in Shu’ab al-Eemaan; authenticated by al-Albaanee (508).

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said :"He who remembers his Lord and he who does not are like the living and the dead." (Bukhari & Muslim)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Should I not inform you of the best of your deeds, the purest of them before your Master, the most elevated of them in rank, better for you than spending gold and silver, better for you than meeting your enemies and striking them and their striking you?” They said, “Of course, O Messenger of Allaah!” He said, “Remembrance of Allaah.” At-Tirmidhee and Ibn Maajah. Authentic (Saheeh al-Jaami 2629)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Two words, that are beloved to ar-Rahmaan, light on the tongue, and heavy on the scale, SubhaanAllaah wa bihamdihi, subhaanAllaah al-‘Adheem.” (Saheeh Muslim and Saheeh Bukhari)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The best dhikr is Laa ilaaha illaallaah. And the best du’aa is Alhamdulillaah.” At-Tirmidhee and Ibn Maajah. Authentic (Saheeh al-Jaami (1104).

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Say: Laa hawla wa laa quwatta illaa billaa a lot; for truly it is a treasure from the treasures of Paradise.” Muslim

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever says, “Astaghfirullaah aladhee laa ilaaha illaa huwa wa atoobu ilayh, Allaah will forgive him, even if he had fleed from the enemies (at the time of battle.” Abu Dawood and at-Tirmidhee

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever says, ‘Astaghfirullaah al-lathee laa ilaaha illa huwa al-hayy al-qayyoom wa atoobu ilayh (I seek forgiveness of Allaah. None is truly worthy of worship but Him, The Ever-Living, The Sustainer of all existence. And I repent to Him)’, they will be forgiven even if they should flee the battlefield.” [Abu Daawood] [Al-Albaani: Saheeh]

The Night of Qadr

Allaah has made Laylat al-Qadr in this month, which is better than a thousand months, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Verily, We have sent it (this Qur’aan) down in the Night of Al-Qadr (Decree).

And what will make you know what the Night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is?

The Night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is better than a thousand months (i.e. worshipping Allaah in that night is better than worshipping Him a thousand months, i.e. 83 years and 4 months).

Therein descend the angels and the Rooh [Jibreel (Gabriel)] by Allaah’s Permission with all Decrees,

(All that night), there is peace (and goodness from Allaah to His believing slaves) until the appearance of dawn”

[al-Qadar 97:1-5]

The night of Qadr could be any of the last ten days of Ramadan, are we ready to reap its rewards? It is a night that is better than 1000 nights; it is a night where the angles descend, including angle Gabriel, are we prepared to welcome the angles? Doing constant good deeds on every night of these last ten days will inshallah not deprive us of the great rewards of the night of Qadr.

These are some ahadeeth about the night of Qadr:

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There has come to you Ramadaan, a blessed month which Allaah has enjoined you to fast, during which the gates of heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and the rebellious devils are chained up. In it there is a night which is better than a thousand months, and whoever is deprived of its goodness is indeed deprived.”

Narrated by al-Nasaa’i, 2106; Ahmad, 8769. classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb, 999.

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever spends Laylat al-Qadr in prayer out of faith and in the hope of reward, will be forgiven his previous sins.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1910; Muslim, 760

‘A’ishah narrated:

“Once, when I saw the Prophet in a good mood, I said to him: “O Messenger of Allah! Supplicate to Allah for me!”

So, he said: “O Allah! Forgive ‘A’ishah her past and future sins, what she has hidden, as well as what she has made apparent.”

So, I began smiling, to the point that my head fell into my lap out of joy.

The Messenger of Allah said to me: “Does my supplication make you happy?”

I replied: “And how can your supplication not make me happy?”

He then said: “By Allah, it is the supplication that I make for my Ummah in every prayer.”

Imam Al-Shafiee, May Allah shower him with Mercy, took knowledge from a multitude of scholars in a variety of fields.

From his scholars in Mecca, whom he benefited a great deal of knowledge from, is the Faqeeh of Mecca: Muslim ibn Khalid Al-Zinji.

This qualified him to issue fatwas and take the place of his teacher when needed.

His teacher, Muslim Al-Zinji, told him:

“Issue fatwas, O Abu Abdullah, for the time has come for you to do so”.

Imam Al-Shafiee was fifteen years old at the time.

Muhammed Ibn Hasnawayh said: I attended [a gathering of] Abu ‘Abdullah Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, and a man asked him: When does a slave [of Allah] find the taste of comfort?

He said: When he places his first foot in Paradise.

قال محمد بن حسنويه: حضرت أبا عبد الله أحمد بن حنبل, وسأله رجل فقال: متى يجد العبد طعم الراحة؟ فقال له: عند أول قدم يضعها في الجنة

Muhannah said: I said to [Imam] Ahmad: Tell us what is the best of deeds?

He said: Seeking Knowledge.

I said: For whom [is it the best of deeds]?

He said: For those who have done it with the correct intention.

I said: And what is it that corrects the intention?

He said: That he intends to humble himself in it, and to remove ignorance from himself.

تهذيب حلية الأولياء 3/144

Abu Hafs at-Tarsousi said:

I went to Abu ‘Abdullah [Imam Ahmad] and said: May Allah have mercy on you Oh Abu ‘Abdullah, with what do the hearts soften?

He remained silent for a while, then raised his head and said: Oh my Son, by eating that which is halal (i.e. lawful).

Then I passed by Bishr ibn al-Harith, and said to him: Oh Abu Nasr, with what do the hearts soften?

He said: “Verily, in the remembrance of Allâh do hearts find rest” [Ar-Rad 13:28].

I said: I just came from Abu ‘Abdullah.

He eagerly said: And what did Abu ‘Abdullah tell you?

I said: By eating that which is halal.

He said: He came with the origin.

Then, I passed by ‘Abd al Wahhab bin Abi al- Hasan and said: Oh Aba al-Hasan, with what do the hearts soften?

He said: “Verily, in the remembrance of Allâh do hearts find rest”.

I said: Well, I just came from Abu ‘Abdullah …

His cheeks reddened with joy, and he said to me: What did Abu ‘Abdullah say?

I said: By eating that which is halal.

He said: He came to you with the essence, he came to you with the essence, the origin is what he said, the origin is what he said [1].

[1] Tahtheeb Hilyat al-Awliyaa 3/144

Just as eating halal is a condition before a duaa’ (supplication) is accepted by Allah, Imam Ahmad –Rahimahu Allah- also saw it as a necessary condition needed before Remembrance could have an effect on one’s heart.

The importance of Eating Halal is indicated in the following hadeeth (Narrated by Muslim):

Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah is Good and only accepts that which is good. Allaah commanded the believers to follow the same commandments as He gave to the Messengers. He says (interpretation of the meaning):

‘O (you) Messengers! Eat of the Tayyibaat [all kinds of Halaal (lawful) foods which Allaah has made lawful (meat of slaughtered eatable animals, milk products, fats, vegetables, fruits)] and do righteous deeds. Verily, I am Well-Acquainted with what you do’ [al-Mu’minoon 23:51]

‘O you who believe (in the Oneness of Allaah — Islamic Monotheism)! Eat of the lawful things that We have provided you with’ [al-Baqarah 2:172]

Then he mentioned a man who has travelled on a long journey and is dishevelled and covered with dust; he stretches forth his hands to the heaven, (saying) “O Lord, O Lord”, but his food is haraam, his drink is haraam, all his nourishment is haraam, so how can he du’aa’ be accepted?”

George is an American who is over 50 years old. He lives in Washington with his wife, his son, and his daughter.

When Dhul Hijja was coming near, George and his family started to follow the news closely to know when Dhul Hijja will start exactly. He watched the TV, his wife listened to the radio, and his son surfed Islamic sites on the internet … everyone eagerly waiting for any news.

When they knew when Dhul Hijja is going to start, they prepared themselves for Eid Al-Adha, which is on the 10th of Dhul Hijja, following the Day of Arafah on the 9th.

The next day, the family drove to the countryside to buy a sheep. They chose the sheep carefully, in accordance with the Islamic guidelines, in order to slaughter it on the first day of Eid.

They carried the sheep with them in the car, and on their way back, the little girl was expressing her joy for the coming Eid. She told her father: “Oh dad how I love Eid! I’ll get to wear my new dress, play with my new doll, and go out with my friends to the park. Oh how I wish all the days of the year were Eid!”.

When they got home, the wife told her husband George: "I’ve read that it is prescribed to divide our sacrifice into three parts: a third we give to the poor and the needy, a third we gift to our neighbours Elizabeth, David and Mark, and a third we eat from and save for the coming weeks."

When the day of Eid came, they were confused where the exact direction of the Qiblah was. They assumed that it’s in a certain direction towards Mecca, and that this should be sufficient.

George held the knife, placed the sheep towards the Qiblah and slaughtered it. The wife then divided the meat into three parts as they agreed.

Suddenly, George remembered something and shouted to his family: "We’re late for church! Today is Sunday, and we’ll miss the Sunday Mass!"

George never missed Church on Sunday. Rather, he always made sure to take his wife and children with him.

At that point, the speaker had finished his story about George and his family. One person from the audience exclaimed: "You confused us with this story of yours!! Is George a Muslim or a Christian?!"

The speaker, Ahmed, replied: “George and his family are Christian. They do not believe that Allah is One, rather they believe He is the third of three.

They also do not believe that Prophet Mohammad – Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him – is the last and final Messenger."

Chattering and mumbling erupted among the audience, and then a voice from the crowd said: "Don’t lie to us Ahmed! Who would believe that George and his family would do all that and be Christian?! Why would a Christian perform all these rituals of Islam and Muslims? From following the news closely in order to determine the start of Dhul Hijja and the specific day of Eid, to buying a sheep from his own money, and slaughtering it as is prescribed in Islam, etc."

Ahmed said with a smile on his face: "My beloved brothers, why do you find it so hard to believe my story? Why can’t you believe that such a Christian family exist? Isn’t there in our Muslim countries a Abdullah, a Mohammed, a Khalid, a Khadija and a Fatima, who celebrate Christian or Jewish Festivals? Don’t we see Muslims celebrating New Years, Christmas, Valentines, Halloween, Easter, etc.? Why is this story so surprising then?

Why is it that we don’t see Jews celebrating our Festivals or the Festivals of the Christians?

Isn’t it because each one has his own Religion, Beliefs, and has his own Festivals?

Why were we so surprised of George being a Christian who celebrates our Eid, and are refusing of his actions, while at the same time we are not surprised of our own actions?!”

Finally, Ahmed said: “I’ve lived in the U.S. for more than ten years. I swear by Allah, I never saw a Christian or a Jew celebrating any of our Eids. Neither have I heard any of them asking about our Festivals and Celebrations. Even when I invited them for Eid al-Fitr in my apartment, no one attended when they knew it was a Religious festival. That is what I experienced during my stay in the West, but when I returned back to my Muslim country, I found Muslims celebrating their holidays.

What shall I say except: There is no power and no might except by Allah.”

[3] Arabic Version:
