Another Invitation from the University of Ain Shams [1]

Autobiography: The Story of my Days

(May Allah have Mercy on him)

In one of the days of March 1966, I was given an invitation, along with some of the well-known Du’aat [2], to attend an Islamic conference in the University of Ain Shams. It was a pleasant gathering and the place was packed, with no room for even an extra foot to be placed.

After we finished our talks, the door was opened for questions.

Those who were invited with me had other commitments to attend to, so they asked to be excused and left, leaving me alone to receive the questions.

Now the questions were diverse, and many of it gave an indication to the questioner’s affiliations. Our days in Da’wah had taught us that there are some questions which the intention behind them is not to seek any benefit, rather the sole purpose behind them is to serve as a net or a trap for the responder to fall into. These come from questioners who might have an ill heart, a sick soul, or a corrupt conscience.

From among these questions, which I knew that the questioner wishes through it to dig a pit for me, and did not intend from it to seek any knowledge or gain any benefit, is one where the questioner asked:

“Is Socialism from Islam?”

Now, Socialism [in Egypt] during that time was a religion that the ruler had taken besides Allah. He kept parading this word in his speeches, as if making it an alternative to the remembrance of Allah. I found myself in light of this question, standing on a crossroad:

Either to speak the Truth and enter Prison, or to say that which pleases the ruler and enter Hell!

Maybe, I could have remained silent and said: “I do not know”.

That could have been an escape from answering.

But these people do not know anything about the etiquettes of saying: “I do not know”, since to them, whoever stands on the pulpit to give a speech, should have gathered the knowledge of the first generations and the last!

I had no other choice but to say the Truth, and surely with Allah rests how all matters are settled.

So I said:

“Oh Questioner, Islam is a complete divine comprehensive system, brought down by Angel Gabriel to the Prophet of this Perfected Message. It is an infallible revelation that brings order and harmony to the affairs of this Life and the Hereafter. As for Socialism, then it is a man-made economical system, and Islam is a whole that can’t be divided, nor can one of its knots be untied from the other. Allah –the Exalted- said:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا ادْخُلُوا فِي السِّلْمِ كَافَّةً

{O you who have believed, enter into Islam completely [and perfectly]} [3]

Meaning enter [it completely] and take the aspects of Islam altogether, not leaving anything out, and this is in-line with what Allah has said in another verse:

الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِي وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الْإِسْلَامَ دِينًا

{This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion}” [4]

The attendance received my answer in a pleasant manner, and what I expected would happen occurred …

The divine decree [of the all Mighty] took place in the day that was decreed by the Possessor of all Greatness and Majesty –Glorified is He-
